Free Knitted Mushroom Pattern

Soooo I have finals this weekend and I decided to go ahead and get all 3 of them done today (I do online classes). When I get stressed I tense my jaw and my neck muscles and I must have been doing that the whole 4 hours because I was in some serious pain when I was done. I needed to do something that relaxed me...knit! So I knitted this little mushroom.

The Little Knitted Mushroom. Sounds like a kid's story. A boring one. Lol! Actually it was pretty fun and relaxing to make. Plus I am one veggie closer to getting all the kid's knitted veggies done. Once again, I am not too familiar with writing knitting patterns, so please leave a comment if you find a mistake. I would really appreciate it :)

The Little Knitted Mushroom:

Needles: I used 4 size 6 double pointed needles, but I think 4 would work really great too.

Darning needle

White worsted weight yarn

Brown or taupe yarn (just a tiny bit of this for the underside)

A little stuffing

Cast on 15 stitches, and leave a 4 or 5 inch tail to close up the bottom with later

Divide the stitches evenly on 3 dp needles (5 stitches on each needle)

Row 1-9: Knit each stitch around (this is the stem)

Row 10: Switch to your brown or taupe color. Knit front and back on each stitch around giving you 30 stitches, 10 stitches on each of your 3 needles

Row 11: Knit front and back, knit 1, knit front back, knit 1, around

Row 12-19: Switch back to white, knit each stitch around (you should have 15 stitches on each needle, and 45 total)

Row 20: Knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches together, knit 1 stitch, repeat around (10 stitches on each needle, 30 total)

Row 21: Knit each stitch around

Row 22: Knit 2 stitches together around (you will end up with 5 stitches on each needle or 15 stitches total)

Row 23: Knit each stitch around

Row 24: Knit 2 together, k1, k2tog, k1 around, you will end up with only 3 stitches left. Cut your yarn and pull it through all of the stitches. Use a small crochet hook to pull the yarn back into the mushroom and pull on it gently. I just left the yarn in there.

Now start with a little stuffing at a time and stuff the top of the mushroom through the opening in the stem. When you are finished stuffing the top, take a little stuffing and stuff the stem. Now take a 4 or 5 inch piece of yarn and weave it in and out of row 9. Pull the string, knot it and weave the ends into the mushroom. Refer to picture above. Now using the tail you left from your cast on, weave the yarn in and out of the bottom of the stem (or row 1) and pull it shut. I usually knot it a couple of times and use a crochet hook to jam it back into the shroom.

That's it! Now don't forget to "like" me on Facebook or become a follower so you can find out when my next pattern for the knit veggies is done. I think you are really going to like it! You can also subscribe by email or rss feed. Just check out the right sidebar :)

  5. What a cute little 'shroom! I made one up today and love it - quite whimsical! I plan to make a few more. I have a quick question about round 20, though. As written (and interpreted by me) I got 38 stitches after completing that round by working (K3, K2tog, K1) repeated to the end. On subsequent round I kept putting decreases in equally spaced until I got to 24 stitches. I then picked up with round 21. Even with a (K1, K2tog) repeat I'd get 31 stitches. Any suggestions for the next mushrooom would be appreciated, though my first one is a bit taller and still cute!
