Trying to use up these last chilly days to get some knitting in as I will hopefully be outside gardening more in the near future!!! Found these sweet little balls o' yarn for half price. No clue what I can use them for but they are decorating my work table right now and that seems to be working just fine!</div>

I made these little birdies with the free <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bluebird-of-happiness-2" target="_blank">"Bluebird of Happiness"</a> pattern on Ravelry. It was from the same author as <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/henrys-bunny" target="_blank">"Henry's Bunny"</a> and I loved it just as much. <br />

I also whipped up this little guy whilst binging on some Doctor Who. I kind of winged it but a similar pattern can be found <a href="http://weefolkart.com/content/basic-knit-doll-6-sizes" target="_blank">here</a>. I did mine in the round with twenty stitches down to the legs where I divided onto 2 sets of 3 needles (10 stitches each) and knit down. I closed the feet up with some yarn. I weaved yarn in and out of every other stitch at the neck and tied in the back. The head was tied up the same way. Arms were knit flat with 8 rows colored and two flesh color, sewn up, stuffed and attached. Hat was knit in the round with twenty stitches and I knit for about 5 rows and reduced stitches by eyeballing it!</div>

I made a deal with a local vegetarian cafe to pick up their scraps two days a week so hopefully it will accumulate quickish!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HRcMvj48lGeX3zGZRqRlUMA_XLPXJ9-SKCH57OoJTUwd-Z7ltDyltHs-Zi-AjiOC2C6AEeP5NQN869nlzrJzn9eaPFohCC2FCE3BBRc-rDUkp8ZU0v37RK-o6UEy3WfpWUN2zjYQxI8/s640/blogger-image--900265117.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2HRcMvj48lGeX3zGZRqRlUMA_XLPXJ9-SKCH57OoJTUwd-Z7ltDyltHs-Zi-AjiOC2C6AEeP5NQN869nlzrJzn9eaPFohCC2FCE3BBRc-rDUkp8ZU0v37RK-o6UEy3WfpWUN2zjYQxI8/s640/blogger-image--900265117.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I also started another potato tower. I would like to be outside getting my garden ready but here we are, stuck inside. I've been getting things ready for Easter to keep me busy until the nice weather this weekend. Here is a sweet little bunny I knitted for my daughter's Easter basket.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCeMMQT_0G-EGpXn6kT5jUjH4fC7nN5ZbtK0P3vlKbHKL0bwrE9XwFGA8ov9BIvfrIeAeKt0IXHsVHjYtaZno4a2U8Yss4i84BOP4Cb7v3g8Y_xCFxW1Pkpb8-tUT_j2Mz2BoelZcFDas/s1600/IMG_0599%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCeMMQT_0G-EGpXn6kT5jUjH4fC7nN5ZbtK0P3vlKbHKL0bwrE9XwFGA8ov9BIvfrIeAeKt0IXHsVHjYtaZno4a2U8Yss4i84BOP4Cb7v3g8Y_xCFxW1Pkpb8-tUT_j2Mz2BoelZcFDas/s320/IMG_0599%5B1%5D.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This pattern turned out to be a challenge but in a good way! It was the perfect next step for me with knitting. I had never done a WT before to build shape so that was fun. The pattern is really neat and well written. It's called<a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/henrys-bunny" target="_blank"> "Henry's Bunny"</a> on Ravelry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKwCareFcDXp5CNI0vEm8FAfDCJYYsw5Gm7MgG-IR_4tqpur0Hk1CGVsDooA46q2I8j5ppXJqHzmzBFDCbqVe6s8LhDTuqdBMwuP_XBVZdXn4hd9sk3lv6okiduh30eofO_68UbglUEVk/s1600/IMG_0526%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKwCareFcDXp5CNI0vEm8FAfDCJYYsw5Gm7MgG-IR_4tqpur0Hk1CGVsDooA46q2I8j5ppXJqHzmzBFDCbqVe6s8LhDTuqdBMwuP_XBVZdXn4hd9sk3lv6okiduh30eofO_68UbglUEVk/s1600/IMG_0526%5B1%5D.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lots of baking going on too. I should take advantage of it as much as possible since I avoid lighting the stove in the summer like the plague!! This is a half whole wheat half white loaf of <a href="http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/easy-no-knead-dutch-oven-crusty-bread.aspx" target="_blank">Mother Earth News's crusty no knead bread.</a> It's da bomb and the closest to good bakery bread I can make at home. You need a Dutch oven but it's one of my favorite cooking and baking tools so you should get one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeM7YQy3nWAcMJ3Ni1Safkhm2MwMnrGT0_VIMSCKwZ2uFrDLMRHAYbOQPtvXh6OR4heVV7vT1gttXEU_zgW6JQoXy2rXPXq6Dbt0Ut3yvH-z1YGczr8uZMs78z2fxpKAHfxa4zxkAVVy0/s1600/IMG_0618%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeM7YQy3nWAcMJ3Ni1Safkhm2MwMnrGT0_VIMSCKwZ2uFrDLMRHAYbOQPtvXh6OR4heVV7vT1gttXEU_zgW6JQoXy2rXPXq6Dbt0Ut3yvH-z1YGczr8uZMs78z2fxpKAHfxa4zxkAVVy0/s1600/IMG_0618%5B1%5D.JPG" height="282" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And lots of woodworking going on as well. I have been making puzzles to sell at a local café but whipped up this sweet little house for my daughters new teeny tiny dolly she got a the flea market last weekend. What do you think?</div>

I know, it sounds like a lot of work and why make something you can buy for like $1 in a box. I'm not saying the boxed stuff isn't good, but homemade pasta dough is like a totally different animal. I don't do it all the time because it is obviously a bit more effort, but not as much as you would think!
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfliU7dGM1gsjtdqKg-qO982eiaBYpItRaiJpK7Rk6bh_s1zKtkyIzc1ANG1Bhyphenhyphenk6kNf8a8HaIa3pyZLlxENQ8SN110yK4DvrlUZk5pr0rOkiFA7cTkawN1k8msFsaKXWi_174q2zYpiM/s1600/IMG_0456%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfliU7dGM1gsjtdqKg-qO982eiaBYpItRaiJpK7Rk6bh_s1zKtkyIzc1ANG1Bhyphenhyphenk6kNf8a8HaIa3pyZLlxENQ8SN110yK4DvrlUZk5pr0rOkiFA7cTkawN1k8msFsaKXWi_174q2zYpiM/s320/IMG_0456%5B1%5D.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This recipe is for a small batch. Enough to make pasta for 2. Just double it if you want more! Pretty simple ingredients. Since eggs vary so much in size just start with 3 eggs and 1 1/2 cup of flour. You can always increase if the dough seems too wet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIhUDn0nLIzWJE9D6j47HMqzi9tB29xbmV8HqZfXZ-2MynnwOmQ85-QTObP8Soa_lhpaRQZPVFSju1uqW0-su6ov6PtekMq6GKUoH7mEUl22LbEdvcwk4Ij96tFUd45MqfbwYqBU8n9gI/s1600/IMG_0457%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIhUDn0nLIzWJE9D6j47HMqzi9tB29xbmV8HqZfXZ-2MynnwOmQ85-QTObP8Soa_lhpaRQZPVFSju1uqW0-su6ov6PtekMq6GKUoH7mEUl22LbEdvcwk4Ij96tFUd45MqfbwYqBU8n9gI/s320/IMG_0457%5B1%5D.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mix the eggs and put them in the center of the flour. Use a fork to mix it up until it's completely incorporated. You should be able to pick it up and form it into a ball. If not...add more flour!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0tN44ZkWalyTi07o5zjBE-K8dVV0XYDFR5hcuG-a-A3A8l1MoGQTRz_TjX6Gax33ZxhTEjN6OkF4eiUg4M5DrKyug3GLr0iiMgnKFIPcgBAnXnmSBwSLEUCe_TNqcmtOBzTY0HawDgTM/s1600/IMG_0458%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0tN44ZkWalyTi07o5zjBE-K8dVV0XYDFR5hcuG-a-A3A8l1MoGQTRz_TjX6Gax33ZxhTEjN6OkF4eiUg4M5DrKyug3GLr0iiMgnKFIPcgBAnXnmSBwSLEUCe_TNqcmtOBzTY0HawDgTM/s320/IMG_0458%5B1%5D.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Knead on a floured surface for like ever. The dough should be springy and smooth. This took me like 15 minutes and I broke a sweat...but I don't have to work out today so it's all good. Chill in the fridge for at least a 1/2 hour.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlwk006wYv-50BMBT6zAMzutP7-YH4d0I8ljvt49eSvmUFVzWbxIuP0Zi085YPi2OFANQqkr3hUtdZBOthQzopFn_Q1iw93ahLplEwqsE5LxcCC8RiQ0PE4ce8whYYQHVKsaJVjcOiI2g/s1600/IMG_0459%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlwk006wYv-50BMBT6zAMzutP7-YH4d0I8ljvt49eSvmUFVzWbxIuP0Zi085YPi2OFANQqkr3hUtdZBOthQzopFn_Q1iw93ahLplEwqsE5LxcCC8RiQ0PE4ce8whYYQHVKsaJVjcOiI2g/s320/IMG_0459%5B1%5D.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now roll out in a pasta maker or use a rolling pin. The key is to get it as thin as possible without tearing it. I filled these with artichoke hearts, sautéed spinach and garlic, and feta. They were amazeballs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Topped em with garlic butter. Nom nom.</div>

Oh I know it's been awhile but I have a good excuse. You see I was just sick and tired of my crappy old point and shoot and it was becoming impossible to enjoy blogging whilst working with such a piece of crap. SO yesterday I went out and bought an ipod which was a big deal for my because as of now I have a Tracfone so yeah...big upgrade.</div>

And some sewing. This little burlap banner is destined for our farmers' market booth this summer. From left to right we have garlic, tomato, turnip, French breakfast radish, and a carrot. They were made from little fabric scraps and zig-zag stitched onto some burlap. I also did a zig-zag stitch around the edge of the burlap to keep it from unraveling and I zig-zag stitched the twine onto the squares. It was a quick and easy project and I think it looks great. What crafting have you been up to?</div>

In fact I don't go unless there is something specific that I am looking for and this Tuesday I was looking for a shelf. I didn't find the shelf but I did control myself a little. There is a glass case and the stuff in the case is 1/2 off on Tuesdays and there was a whole box of jewelry I wanted to dig through but I controlled myself...a bit. I could not however pass up the following items...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These...<strong><em>these</em></strong> most awesome vintage (1934 according to the interwebs) teacups and plate. The cups have some small cracks and the plate is scuffed but they were .25 each so I paid like nothing for them. I should have got more, there <em>were</em> more but seriously...what am I going to do with these let alone MORE of these? I do have some upcycling ideas that may or may not get done in the future. We will see!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This groovy 60's Christmas candle! My grandma has one like it that is the Little Drummer Boy and I just really liked the church on this one. It reminds me of my <a href="http://www.bigcraftyblog.blogspot.com/2013/12/christmas-decorating.html" target="_blank">Putz</a> houses and I plan to put them together next year...well not too close (the Putz houses being made out of 50 year old cardboard and all).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And these last two little items. The peg thingy will be spray painted and hung in either the kitchen or the back porch I think. The gold frame I want to spray paint white and hang in our room. Part of me is tempted to chalkboard it but we will see.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And for those of you thinking "Dude, isn't this a craft blog? What's with the all the pictures of old junk?!" (ok don't know if anyone is actually thinking that), here is a picture of my latest project. The beginnings of a Lego quilt that needs to be finished by Sunday. I need more fabric for the top but the roads were outrageous today so I will venture out tomorrow. The colors were my sons choice and man, I don't know what it is about these colors but they make me queasy. I can't decide if it's because I had a clown lamp in my childhood room in the 80's this color or if it reminds me of elementary gym class (you know, the parachute, and dodge balls, and my gym teachers hideous Jamz). Blech. But my little man wants these colors so that's what he gets!</div>

There were quite a few but I felt like I should leave some for someone else to find.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A giraffe, a dragon, and a mouse! There is also a frog floating around the house somewhere. Perhaps we will find him again someday...maybe not. There was an awesome lady puppet with super crazy exaggerated features (think Lady Elaine Fairchilde but with long red hair!) but I knew she would freak the heck right out of my kids so I had to pass unfortunately. I am hoping the purchase of these puppets will help me get my act together to make <a href="http://thecraftnut.blogspot.com/2010/04/puppet-theater.html" target="_blank">this.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In other news...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This little lady has been a WIP since before my daughter's birthday in September. I stopped working on her when her head turned out the way it did. It's just totally not what I wanted. I was hoping for more of a baby face and hers is a little more mature than I expected. Her feet also turned out ridiculous and her legs are far too short. Her arms, which you can't really see in this photo, make her look like a body builder. BUT I just couldn't stand the thought of those wasted hours so I finished her up last weekend. I also found some little fairy wings at the thrift store and sewed them onto her dress. So now she is a fairy with incredible upper body strength. She actually looks pretty good in this pic but I don't think she as impressive in real life. I keep trying with these Waldorf dolls, I really do. I just can't seem to get it. I made the decision to splurge on an American Girl doll for my daughter (since they were discontinuing my fav, Molly) and make a Waldorf doll instead of purchasing one. Now I sort of wish I had gone the other way...oh well though! Maybe I can just keep trying. What do you think of her?</div>

I had only taken 3 when the camera disappeared and no one would fess up. I just found it under a couch pillow and I suspect my little photographer may have had something to do with that. Anyways here are <em>some</em> of my finds. I will photograph the rest tomorrow....if I can find the rest of my thrifty finds (I already forget what I got and can't seem to find them, for realz). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First up, some Holly Hobbyish (I think it's a knock off) fabric that I have NO clue what to do with. Maybe a skirt for the little one? Hmmm. Also some really awesome cloth napkins that have some cross stitch on them. It's very well done and I love the colors! I have been wanting to get back to using cloth napkins so this is a good time to start!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf1-eXiqaO4fYmT5cuMWNCocSL7P8rjvjtLCXR0vA8LfaWwpj_HPE3jUYfqh_MWYPrXQSxhA4nS58JPOESRAZAFIkl9UgrQ3Tr-Nmz4-ZDU2u4F48WvjVoRDWtevTwSpcUgEpPKiFyqGM/s1600/thriftytues28.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf1-eXiqaO4fYmT5cuMWNCocSL7P8rjvjtLCXR0vA8LfaWwpj_HPE3jUYfqh_MWYPrXQSxhA4nS58JPOESRAZAFIkl9UgrQ3Tr-Nmz4-ZDU2u4F48WvjVoRDWtevTwSpcUgEpPKiFyqGM/s1600/thriftytues28.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this green McCoy bowl that is <em>unchipped</em> which makes me happy since the last one I purchased had a giant chip that I didn't see until I got home. I don't even know what I am going to do with it...but I like it so that's all that matters right?</div>

And this find pretty much validates my belief in the thrift store fairy. I mean seriously? Red, aqua, and black and white stripes. Muh fav. Anyways I will be back tomorrow with the rest...hopefully.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_4wzNklJCeEZiBeSZYD8tr3XRTuPVli4ohzYhSn50khvnvRwDn1xuY0Zsg7z9ueEmkOz27F1rynsY_QfZlXkB5dUKGDoC29BVwiwRN4eRBgSsOOeug5AaGREPIVYYOYtGX9InRCGvZG0/s1600/pillow2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_4wzNklJCeEZiBeSZYD8tr3XRTuPVli4ohzYhSn50khvnvRwDn1xuY0Zsg7z9ueEmkOz27F1rynsY_QfZlXkB5dUKGDoC29BVwiwRN4eRBgSsOOeug5AaGREPIVYYOYtGX9InRCGvZG0/s1600/pillow2.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am really really trying my very hardest not to buy anymore fabric. I have plenty so why not use it, right? This may not be the fabric of my dreams but it was my grandma's which increases the pillow's granny awesomeness, and I have had it <em>forever</em>. Time to use some.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgen-KTjsOSNkQe1phMc01LS_yUzLbRkb65WKo1nj_Urm-RILT86XQkPgO2WR5eWfAHR5N61xRgsqcpgW9GZXNJPk-1Le81GAGJkmu4mJ6pF2YFZRFRmnDV165bBQBAh-NvnsJa5928uD4/s1600/pillow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgen-KTjsOSNkQe1phMc01LS_yUzLbRkb65WKo1nj_Urm-RILT86XQkPgO2WR5eWfAHR5N61xRgsqcpgW9GZXNJPk-1Le81GAGJkmu4mJ6pF2YFZRFRmnDV165bBQBAh-NvnsJa5928uD4/s1600/pillow.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here it is hanging out with my new quilt I made. Grantastic. My plan is to have a million handmade pillows on the couch and each one be different. One down, 999,999 to go. <br />
<br />
P.S. Thrifty Tuesday will be tomorrow. I found some totally awesome stuff but after the day I had I just want to drink some chamomile tea and chill. Also someone requested the pattern for the crochet pocket. I promise I will work on it asap! Can't wait to get it up!Mama G @ bigcraftyblog.blogspot.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13370591988909898527noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7274616035257802799.post-61763745080338562532014-01-21T11:50:00.001-08:002014-01-21T11:50:47.508-08:00Thrifty TuesdaysJust popped in to show you some of the things I got today. Not a ton of stuff (thankfully!) but some really neat treasures.

A wool sweater to make one of <a href="http://webloomhere.blogspot.ca/2012/07/making-waldorf-inspired-glove-puppets.html" target="_blank">these.</a> And the fun yellow vintage fabric is about 2-3 yards and was only $1! I see some sundresses for the wee one in the near future (tonight?).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I spotted these candlesticks and could tell by the look of the paint that they were some kind of good pottery. I thought maybe they were McCoy but the bottom was marked Cowan. I did some research and this pair sells for between $15-$35 on Ebay. I paid $1!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was extremely happy to find this painting. I had been eyeballing a small, less well done painting for a few weeks at the same store. It was $10 and I honestly didn't know if I even wanted to pay that for it. This one was larger and didn't have a price. When I asked the lady how much it was she said $6...and it was half price day! $3?! Woohoo! I know paintings are supposed to go at eye level (right?) but I had another idea for this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have very high ceilings in our downstairs and the empty space above this vanity in our entry area looked weird. I think this painting really fills up the space nicely. What do you think?</div>

Problem is I don't possess the skills to do them! So I am trying to expand my knowledge my trying out more challenging patterns. I have never made anything bigger than a hat so I decided the next logical step would be a sweater.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNPM3SgauJ7iFq5JHA8xccBBIMQc8ERdiElcjwL4opKTqdVAZG6UYLkUAk1nTSV6vgLTC9kY0Z-hEXdS0e09ksEihsRxs3_m2NPboMePQXvmmmWcGKq4geXZi8979JpS-HiGxbJp4bwW8/s1600/knitsweater.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNPM3SgauJ7iFq5JHA8xccBBIMQc8ERdiElcjwL4opKTqdVAZG6UYLkUAk1nTSV6vgLTC9kY0Z-hEXdS0e09ksEihsRxs3_m2NPboMePQXvmmmWcGKq4geXZi8979JpS-HiGxbJp4bwW8/s320/knitsweater.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided on the <a href="http://thesummeropossum.blogspot.com/2012/07/little-girls-swing-vest.html" target="_blank">Little Girl's Swing Vest</a> pattern. It's a free pattern on Ravelry and was a great beginners pattern for a little girl's cardigan. I used size 10 1/2 needles instead of 10 because my daughter barely fits in 4t. This turned out to be the perfect size. Maybe a 5/6? It is all one piece and I didn't have any problems with it...well other than my obvious crappy tension. I'm sure the knitting experts would be clutching their pearls (or purls) at the sight of it! I have been trying to use the European knit stitch (not even trying the purl yet!) so this was kind of a practice piece for me. I originally envisioned aqua granny squares as pockets but I had <em>just </em>enough to make 2 pockets and promptly ruined one by trying to sew my Babushka ribbon on it. Since I need more yarn like I need a kick in the shin I decided just to make do with what I had.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used this pretty white wool yarn I purchased from a spinner in my hometown. I just used an E hook to make a simple motif for the pockets. If anyone is interested in the pattern leave a comment below asking for it. Otherwise I probably won't be posting it.</div>

I narrowed my button collection down to these 3 cute little vintage finds. I went with the one on the right but I might wimp out and buy a larger aqua one since I had my heart set on that color.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have never really sewn onto knitting like this. I just pinned the pockets down how I wanted them and sewed them on with an embroidery needle and a bit of the white yarn. I tried to stretch the top out a bit to make it more pocketish (auto correct is telling me that isn't a work, I disagree).</div>

Ok in my defense they were having their Winter Warm-up sale and red tag fabric was 1/2 off and patterns were <em>one dollar</em> <u>each</u>! Plus my little bear needs some summer clothes!<br />

She calls this dress her "Sassy Dress". She is the sassiest things around so it's only fitting I suppose. The pattern design is pretty ingenious. No zippers (woohoo!) and just a little elastic in the back. This is not a good pattern for just guessing which size would work though. I wish I would have measured her first because the back is HUGE. I had to safety pin it. It will probably fit her until she is 10! The pattern itself includes a pattern for a purse with the same bow, dress, shirt, shorts, pants, and even a pattern for an 18 in. doll dress!! Oh and a hair bow. A really good value considering all the stuff you can make!</div>

If you read my previous "<a href="http://www.bigcraftyblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/thrifty-tuesday_17.html" target="_blank">Thrifty Tuesday</a>" post, I found this olive green McCoy bowl but discovered a chip in the bottom when I got home. I almost got rid of it but felt bad about it so I figured since it was damaged I could upcycle it!<br />

I rummages around a bit in the basement and found a glass candlestick holder, and a silver tray. I had made this pincushion from an old teacup and some fabric using this <em><a href="http://www.punkprojects.com/2011/01/spotted-fox-guest-blog.html?m=1" target="_blank">super simple tutorial.</a></em> Here is what I came up with! I found the candle stick worked great. Make sure to stack everything up before you attach it for good. That way you can make sure it will balance correctly. In this picture the silver tray looks the same size as the bowl...it's not! Choose a larger item to go on the bottom.</div>

Turns out my SD card was going bad. Good to know! Thankfully I had just backed up my pictures a few weeks ago so I only lost a few. So I got a new SD card and now I can share some of my thrifty finds from this Tuesday!

First we start with these awesome vintage cookbooks I found. There was a whole box of them plus BAGS and BAGS of recipes cut out from magazines. They were all probably from the 50's and it took some serious restraint to not buy them all up. I mean I could have framed a bunch of the really cool looking recipes...but <em>would</em> I? Probably not. So I passed them up and just picked out two of my favorite books. Tasty Table Treats (the one with the menacing looking lady) is actually a vegetarian cookbook although there is no indication of this fact on the front or back of this book. I think they were trying to trick people? Some of the recipes are such vegetarian classics as parsley loaf (pretty much just breadcrumbs and a crap ton of parsley), Tampa Bay Soup (veggie gumbo with an unreasonable amount of <em>peanut butter</em>, and my favorite...hot slaw which consists of 2 ingredients, cabbage and sauerkraut juice heated up. Ew. I mean just eat the sauerkraut! Let's all be grateful that vegetarian cooking has come a long way!</div>

And not really part of Thrifty Tuesday but I ordered this book of Dale Dearmond prints. My grandma gave me the same book and I looked online for prints for sale but I didn't find much. She was an Alaskan artist that my grandma came across while traveling in Alaska in the 90's.</div>

She got the book for me for my 10th birthday which I am sure was promptly shoved in a bookshelf only to be discovered a few years ago. The prints (wood block) are amazing and I have wanted some to hang on my walls. The original gift book has a little message written to me from my grandma so it couldn't be dissected but I ordered this used copy from Amazon for $5.</div>

Another technically not "Thrifty Tuesday" item which was "thrifted" from my basement which is actually full of thrifty goodness I keep forgetting about. Maybe I should just start going down in my basement and going through boxes on Tuesday? Would save me a bit of money! This awesome potato chip tin from the 40's is just too cool. I didn't know potato chips were a health food...sweet! I plan on using it as a trash can for thread and scrappy fabric bits in the old workspace.</div>

I am also trying to start a Thrifty Tuesday Pinterest board so everyone can share their own thrifty finds. Follow the link and email me to request to join!</div>

We do it every year and we all love it. There are so many unique shops, ethnic grocery stores, and great restaurants. We even go armed with a list made specifically for shopping in The Strip.<br />

One of the things I buy <em>every single time</em> are these coffee bags from our favorite coffee shop. I used to pay $1 for 3 but this trip they jumped all the way up to $2 a piece! And <em>oh mama!</em> did I get a real treat by stopping in <a href="http://www.loomshowroom.com/" target="_blank">Loom Textiles</a>, a little fabric shop. I am pretty sure I saw it last year but since we were all kinds of broke I believe I reluctantly passed it up. Thanks goodness I did because I would have been heartbroken to have not been able to buy anything. This year however I did have a little cash money burning a hole in my pocket so I picked up a yard of this Dia De Los Muertos fabric. I found some Dia De Los Muertos fabric at Joann's last year but it was like 1/10 as cool as this stuff. They had like 2 or 3 shelves of different kinds. I could have gone broke easily. I just can't even describe the variety. Every fabric was a winner. If you are in the area ever, I highly suggest going there!</div>

One more thing, I made this quick scarf the night before we left...at 9 pm...when I should have been packing....or cleaning. Anyways I just wanted to "get quilty" so I whipped it up. It was super easy and only took about an hour. The squares were 6 inches wide and varying lengths. I lined the back with a cream colored fabric and the bottom squares are actually pockets. I sewed in between each square to keep it held together. How do you like it?</div>

It started, of course, after the holidays and I felt like garbage from all the sweets and treats I had eaten. We don't purchase salad dressing because...well I don't like it and it's too expensive. I usually just stick with oil and vinegar but shook things up a bit by making a really delish sweet and sour type dressing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_lCjfkm2JINNm6hn9VPjMkDvYOEW8b5j4GuhN8vDkdxOcUh65Hpu9KXoixjbr7KDZLCfziyov7aO0t4gzi1EJDLifgt9IXY-n88E2rPPINuHcxBz_hlRwjRPqV7g9Jp3s-Tsxhyphenhyphen5hkkM/s1600/sweetandsour.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_lCjfkm2JINNm6hn9VPjMkDvYOEW8b5j4GuhN8vDkdxOcUh65Hpu9KXoixjbr7KDZLCfziyov7aO0t4gzi1EJDLifgt9IXY-n88E2rPPINuHcxBz_hlRwjRPqV7g9Jp3s-Tsxhyphenhyphen5hkkM/s1600/sweetandsour.jpg" height="400" width="306" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The salad is simply fresh spinach, chopped clementine, thin sliced red onion, shredded carrot, and Feta cheese. A little tip to make the onions sweeter that I learned in my teenage fast food glory days (Wendy's to be precise) is to soak the onions in salt water (about 1 cup water to 1 tbsp. salt should do) for a bit. It sweetens them up and takes away the bitterness!</div>

1/3 c. olive oil (I do not use EVOO for cooking purposes)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1/3 c. red wine vinegar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2 tbsp. super fine chopped red onion</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 tbsp. Dijon mustard</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1 tbsp. Agave syrup</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Salt and pepper salad to taste!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Heat olive oil on medium heat for a few minutes. Add chopped red onion and cook until the onion is a nice golden brown. Take off heat and let sit until room temp. Pour the oil carefully into a jar and add the vinegar, mustard, and Agave. Put on a lid and shake, shake, shake until the mustard has emulsified the mixture. Pour into a fancy shmancy container or just leave it in the jar! </div>

You can check out my old ones under labels on the right sidebar if you want. I have been trying my best to only go to the thrift store when I am really looking for something. Lately it has been boring stuff like organizational items for homeschooling. I went today specifically for some fabric to finish my daughter's quilt. I was also looking for some frames for an exciting project I have coming up (as soon as that darn Amazon book gets here!). <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXv3jkHmCOP_s_zLuOCwR1cGHkAySn2bVAJfXT-lZ1qllLTq-lbH4yRwIhOoHUAtbWOIRBTk61FGjWhnkMR2rLCpTPzC07QgzqTcXUqfIMDHjvJJ-0k1waJsu0HEKFGm0ga_Prv7TnYVA/s1600/thriftytues.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXv3jkHmCOP_s_zLuOCwR1cGHkAySn2bVAJfXT-lZ1qllLTq-lbH4yRwIhOoHUAtbWOIRBTk61FGjWhnkMR2rLCpTPzC07QgzqTcXUqfIMDHjvJJ-0k1waJsu0HEKFGm0ga_Prv7TnYVA/s1600/thriftytues.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A frame I did find! Actually two but I forgot to take a picture of the other one (looks pretty much like this one!). Well wouldn't you know that piece of cardboard backing, when turned around, is this kind of awesome vintage farm scene. It's just a print but darn it if I don't love it. Well shucks, I guess I will just have to go out next Tuesday to look for another frame to replace this one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbGnda4mQftQPOchNO5mBVAYx9m4vbWJUzOY0sN2RK-1-SlPzg39ZTg5mMQsXwBDf0BPoAxxYkUeI9VCnUc7GtradflIxDgYhNO-GmZ7CsguYcVZPloQvhbF3oAFLPBflD4DcI6A5YaoM/s1600/thriftytues2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbGnda4mQftQPOchNO5mBVAYx9m4vbWJUzOY0sN2RK-1-SlPzg39ZTg5mMQsXwBDf0BPoAxxYkUeI9VCnUc7GtradflIxDgYhNO-GmZ7CsguYcVZPloQvhbF3oAFLPBflD4DcI6A5YaoM/s1600/thriftytues2.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And well you know I had to look at the other stuff while I was there. And I do have this thing for vintage mugs. Boy did I score!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Isn't this the most awesomely awesome vintage airplane mug you have ever seen? I'm not even an airplane person but this is just too cool anyways. It might even be better than my penny-farthing mug I found a few years ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also found this cute little handmade doll jacket that should fit our American Girl Molly just right. You know my thrift store (yes it's mine, I mean I don't own it...but it's still mine) has all these nooks and crannies where they try and pile things that "make sense" together. There are lots of shelves with drawers to go through. One time I found a drawer full of nothing but vintage Christmas lights (the really old big ones). This time I found a drawer labeled "doll clothes". Now we have just recently been getting into dressing the dolls for different occasions and such so maybe I just missed it before, but I'm glad I know where it is now! This little number needs some repairs in the armpit but for .25 I figured it was well worth it! Especially since I was informed last time we took Molly out that she needed a jacket. Well now she is set! How do you guys like my finds?!</div>

I am trying to create a space that looks good and uses some of the odds and ends we have around the house without overcrowding. This area is pretty much the first thing you see when you walk in the front door so I am doing my best to keep the chaos at bay!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTcDr3_ljMtW4U4hlV3gGJdCj5X5u_QpeCMEwUVrg4lh6WMThYUh83Jwd9L6VePxMRLtkjs5X4Sjf7z53Y4JbzzVZEJYXhFMKyBmAoIg0t3W8JMTC4b1UEfYArIWaFdh2NXuX2Puy31M/s1600/workspace4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoTcDr3_ljMtW4U4hlV3gGJdCj5X5u_QpeCMEwUVrg4lh6WMThYUh83Jwd9L6VePxMRLtkjs5X4Sjf7z53Y4JbzzVZEJYXhFMKyBmAoIg0t3W8JMTC4b1UEfYArIWaFdh2NXuX2Puy31M/s1600/workspace4.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We ended up putting my sewing machine on a small sewing table under the window. Much safer to sew on than the old trampoline table! The porcelain top table works well as a plain old workspace though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNNiM3WHPukUofuHnAgpXXDCsYb6gCHVft8TMcAXCXmN4311GRBjZFB9YlRcmA-FJ4dbw4t4kbzLQ53VTjjxwHaJp8fzpnDOoPWHDC_lRSz_13g-1a7bvVzquAEbvsG3GsB-uPxnJFO8/s1600/workspace5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoNNiM3WHPukUofuHnAgpXXDCsYb6gCHVft8TMcAXCXmN4311GRBjZFB9YlRcmA-FJ4dbw4t4kbzLQ53VTjjxwHaJp8fzpnDOoPWHDC_lRSz_13g-1a7bvVzquAEbvsG3GsB-uPxnJFO8/s1600/workspace5.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My wine cork pin board I finally got around to making. I got the idea from Pinterest and just hot glued them to a yardstick. I am going to have to find a better glue though because as usual the hot glue doesn't really hold them on well. Especially when one is constantly pinning and unpinning inspiration!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBbMg0tr8BQXeYnpcdvTV60t0CwsD8sSjIPSfiV_9q4lzgN0zNhSKZftQ9jNE6mjh3Sn3R6Dfi3RKEeE7fK5JEp6jvFYtoDAfpMyMqWFl3IM_c0RpsI5UkLGfjftqFj0YVqINoweLlsJk/s1600/workspace6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBbMg0tr8BQXeYnpcdvTV60t0CwsD8sSjIPSfiV_9q4lzgN0zNhSKZftQ9jNE6mjh3Sn3R6Dfi3RKEeE7fK5JEp6jvFYtoDAfpMyMqWFl3IM_c0RpsI5UkLGfjftqFj0YVqINoweLlsJk/s1600/workspace6.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The little wooden shelf is actually the cash drawer from the old general store my father in law's dad owned back in the day. The metal basket is a flea market find and is a bike basket that we removed the hardware from. <br />
<br />
Having this space has been wonderful and it is much easier to create when I have a clean area just waiting for me!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have had some seriously arctic temperatures the past few days. This is the <em>inside</em> of my kitchen window last night. Yup, pretty chilly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The perfect time to do a little crafting! I have been wanting to hang something on the mantle and was thinking of a bunting. I really wanted to do something other than the regular old triangle bunting though. We aren't huge Valentine's Day celebrators around here but I thought a little nod to the holiday wouldn't be a bad idea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO231LyUNw0qIFxlDj6asEgPf5S4canT0zyrKbQNJihm2PFWknQ9auFjjJn8rXwOl6bPqBmb45ocIldXKKF6pZxETj_Nf61QFDRzgSXgcUd1MzA3DJH0Wnj_IpsOSkpWumZLRdWnc_OPM/s1600/scrappyheartbanner.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO231LyUNw0qIFxlDj6asEgPf5S4canT0zyrKbQNJihm2PFWknQ9auFjjJn8rXwOl6bPqBmb45ocIldXKKF6pZxETj_Nf61QFDRzgSXgcUd1MzA3DJH0Wnj_IpsOSkpWumZLRdWnc_OPM/s1600/scrappyheartbanner.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you didn't already know, fabric can be easily sewn onto thicker paper. These manila tags are leftover from tags I used to make and sell at craft shows. I also used a little jute to tie them up. I used a zigzag stitch and it worked quite well. I tried to use some bits of an old felted sweater but it was very stretchy and a challenge to sew so I just stuck to regular cotton fabrics after that.</div>

I am much more of a knitter and crocheter. I realized the reason I seem to gravitate to these hobbies is because I can do them on the couch with my family around in the evening. If I sew I have to do it by myself upstairs which is no fun. I kind of like this family of mine! We took down the Christmas tree and John and I decided to turn that corner into the sewing corner. <br />

This being an old house (and supposedly a duplex at one time which would be impressive for a 1200 sq. ft. house) there are some extra doors in rooms that don't really get used. We never use this entrance to the stairs so we usually put something in front of it.</div>

I just put out a few of the essentials. Didn't want to overcrowd it. I sat down to sew to see if I liked it and it was like sewing on a trampoline. The stuff pictured above went flying all over the place. Apparently the top of the table isn't too sturdy and bounced up and down. I mean with all this snow we are getting it will be good to have an extra heating source, right? Some of it peeled off because of it's past rental status and shabby repairs that were made here and there. I'm not an expert on the stuff but if I were to wall up a fireplace I wouldn't use 100% joint compound. Oh well, it works for now and we can always touch it up a bit.</div>

I have been seriously enjoying our winter break from my schooling and homeschooling. Work also slows down a bit in December so I finally had some free time! I have been wanting to make a quilt since I was 10 so it was about time to get around to it.</div>

I used fabric I had on hand (some was my grandma's so I have had it for 15+ years!!). I used an old flannel sheet for the backing and did purchase the batting although I think I will use a flannel blanket next time. I used the fusible batting which didn't seem to work so well. Has anyone else had problems with it? It's taken me a few years to find a nice simple quilt tutorial. All the other ones I have found seem to be far too complicated for a beginner. I just wanted the simplest block quilt for a first time. I did make the quilt larger than the tutorial and the blocks were 13 in. by 13 in. I made it in about 4 hours and am so happy with it! Here is the tutorial by Kimberly at <a href="http://www.atimetofreeze.com/super-simple-quilt-tutorial/" target="_blank">A Time to Freeze</a>. Thank you Kimberly for making a simple beginner tutorial!!!<br />

I also got to try out my new chunky knit cabled hat and oh my is it warm! In fact it might have to be reserved for very cold days as a mildly cold day might be too warm for it. It is seriously comfy and fits me better than any hat I have ever made before. Therefore I have declared it "the best hat ever" (well to me anyways!).</div>

I have jotted down the pattern for you in case you would also like to make this chunky cabled knit hat.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fair warning, this pattern hasn't been "tested" except by me. If there is a problem and you email me I will respond quickly (glennfamilygardens at g mail dot com). If you would like to link to this pattern feel free to use one picture and a link to the project. You guys sharing my projects is always appreciated! Please feel free to sell any hats you make from this pattern just please please don't sell the pattern or copy and paste it onto your blog. I worked really hard getting this just right!<a data-pin-config="above" data-pin-do="buttonPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbigcraftyblog.blogspot.com%2F2014%2F01%2Ffree-pattern-chunky-knit-hat-with-cables.html&media=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-RiU4DM7tOvI%2FUscid7TQcjI%2FAAAAAAAABtI%2FuBs5rWZUdgU%2Fs1600%2Fknithat3.jpg&description=Simple%20Free%20Chunky%20Cabled%20Knit%20Hat%20by%20Mama%20G"><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pinit_fg_en_rect_gray_20.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Needles: Size 10 1/2 to cast on and 5 size 9 double pointed needles to make the hat. I found that casting on with the larger sized needle really helped me attain the perfect stretch. I found I was casting on way too tight with just the 9's. If you are able to cast on very loosely with the 9's I think it would be fine.<br />
<br />
Yarn: Lionbrand Hometown USA Chunky (This is labeled as "super bulky" but it doesn't seem as bulky as the Lionbrand chunky wool blend yarn and seems chunkier than Bernat chunky yarn. I find their to be a huge difference in yarns so I think it is pretty important to use the Hometown chunky.)<br />
<br />
Cable: I did a two over two left slanting cable over 4 stitches. It is just like the first cable in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_NNa8eORjE" target="_blank">this</a> YouTube video. I'll just refer to it as "cable" in the pattern.<br />
<br />
Cast on 64<br />
<br />
Rows 1-5: k2 p2 around (5 rows of ribbing total)<br />
<br />
Row 6: Cable over the first 4 stitched, p4, around (8 times total)<br />
<br />
Row 7-11: k4, p4 around<br />
<br />
Row 12: Cable over the first 4 stitches, p4 around (8 times total)<br />
<br />
Row 13-17: k4, p4 around<br />
<br />
Row 18: Cable over the first 4 stitches, p4, around (8 times total)<br />
<br />
Row 19-23: k4, p4 around <br />
<br />
Row 24: Cable over the first 4 stitches, p4, around (8 times total)<br />
<br />
Closing up the top<br />
<br />
Row 25: k4 p2tog p2 around<br />
<br />
Row 26: k4 p2tog p1 around<br />
<br />
Row 27: k4 p2tog around<br />
<br />
Row 28: k3 k2tog k3 k2tog around<br />
<br />
Row 29: k2 k2tog around<br />
<br />
Row 30: k1 k2tog k1 around<br />
<br />
Row 31: k1 k2tog around<br />
<br />
Row 32: k 2tog around<br />
<br />
Cut about 6 inches of yarn, thread it through the remaining stitches and close up the top. That's it! <br />
<br />
Now part of my New Year's crafty resolutions is to be better at fixing patterns if things go awry. Please email me or leave a comment if something isn't clear or if there is a mistake. I promise to fix it as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy it!<a data-pin-config="above" data-pin-do="buttonPin" href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbigcraftyblog.blogspot.com%2F2014%2F01%2Ffree-pattern-chunky-knit-hat-with-cables.html&media=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-RiU4DM7tOvI%2FUscid7TQcjI%2FAAAAAAAABtI%2FuBs5rWZUdgU%2Fs1600%2Fknithat3.jpg&description=Simple%20Free%20Chunky%20Cabled%20Knit%20Hat%20by%20Mama%20G"><img src="//assets.pinterest.com/images/pidgets/pinit_fg_en_rect_gray_20.png" /></a><br />

Just popping in to wish everyone a Happy New Years! We had a chill evening last night with our usual Chinese food (eggrolls, crab rangoon, and fried rice), video games, and knitting. I went a little crazy and got O'Fallon's Cherry Chocolate Beer (unusual combo yes?). We slept in this morning and had friends over for dinner tonight. It was a very nice and relaxing holiday. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I am working on a new pattern for a knitted hat with...cables! I'll tell you what, those suckers sure are finicky and I have already had to start over twice. Hopefully this last attempt will be it for me and I can have a pattern up soon. I sure love the way it looks so far! I just have to close up the top and am sure hoping it looks good. Wish me luck! I hope you all had a wonderful New Years and may 2014 be a year full of awesome crafting!</div>

Overall I did pretty well but there were a few more store bought substitutions than I wanted. Oh well! Here are the things I made...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYR9NB9cwBFf29AZQhoiDCe9XKAunSjsh6W6Ctga22iNT4nljkREEPbFDmfkIv4fm7lSubzZxmvVxos_IKSUzrJGZu6WFElGY2yXQRD-ZwvuNGJ7gZ7SbsVdyw4JfMW1EqQ3lLlCAW5A8/s1600/farmset.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYR9NB9cwBFf29AZQhoiDCe9XKAunSjsh6W6Ctga22iNT4nljkREEPbFDmfkIv4fm7lSubzZxmvVxos_IKSUzrJGZu6WFElGY2yXQRD-ZwvuNGJ7gZ7SbsVdyw4JfMW1EqQ3lLlCAW5A8/s400/farmset.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
I've wanted to make them a farm play set for awhile. I found the wooden manger at a thrift store and painted it like a barn. The playsilk is actually a stretchy cotton fabric from Joann's and I dyed it with food coloring. We switched to the natural food coloring and it was a perfect project to use the other stuff for. I used this tutorial <a href="http://www.tinydreamercreative.com/2011/05/making-rainbow-playsilks-together/" target="_blank">here</a> and loved it.</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh45sv2WQRcKQWsMvFn0_XI4SMaksXZCSgDhhNDk16Y7OjfEPtqJpRb7NWoMXq6k2JICmfDOF3r3Y8QJc3xsjXSwJzah3oI40PFoFczhwhRpyn4tmKJe5SHTe66RKuC5kfCx2wJID82vHs/s1600/owlslingshot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh45sv2WQRcKQWsMvFn0_XI4SMaksXZCSgDhhNDk16Y7OjfEPtqJpRb7NWoMXq6k2JICmfDOF3r3Y8QJc3xsjXSwJzah3oI40PFoFczhwhRpyn4tmKJe5SHTe66RKuC5kfCx2wJID82vHs/s400/owlslingshot.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The slingshot was a big hit with my son. I gave him a bag of cotton balls and he is only allowed to use it when my husband and I are around. He loves games where he has to hit a target so he just loves this. The owl stuffie is a replacement for the original which disappeared after we entered it in the fair. My daughter was very happy to get a replacement. She says it is better now that it is pink (of course). I used a combo of my owl purse and owl pillow pattern to make this. It falls in between both of those patterns in size and is perfect to snuggle. You can find both of those pattern in the "crochet pattern" page above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did take a break from making gifts to make myself this scarf. I have never done a drop stitch before and it worked up pretty quick. I love the soft pink color. It seems to snag easily though and a couple strands are pulled out and I can't get them back in. I am not sure if the needles I used were too large? Anyways I love it and it was nice to make something for myself. Hope you all have a Merry Christmas! Did you make any gifts this year?</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We first found out about Santa Lucia from the Rick Steve's Christmas Special (highly recommend this video!). She is celebrated in various parts of the world on Dec. 13th. I guess it is pretty commonly observed through the Waldorf teachings. We don't "do" Waldorf technically but I love the toys and art supplies etc. so we probably would have eventually found out about it! In fact I hear rumors of a Star Boy who is associated with Santa Lucia who I have yet to learn about. I am pretty happy with the way Lucia turned out and the kids love her to that's all that matters. She now happily adorns our nature table. I am thinking about replacing her with a little Bafana after the 25th.</div>

We made the traditional <a href="http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/rice-recipes/icelandic-rice-pudding" target="_blank">rice pudding</a> which is far more tasty than it looks. I'm also in the process of getting some presents done. I happen to be cutting it rather close on some of them. I used my <a href="http://www.bigcraftyblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/free-crochet-owl-purse-pattern.html" target="_blank">"Oh So Cute Owl Purse"</a> pattern to make my daughter a smaller version of the <a href="http://www.bigcraftyblog.blogspot.com/2013/08/free-crochet-pattern-owl-pillowstuffie.html" target="_blank">"Owl Stuffie".</a> Actually I added a round on the circle and added another round to the head. Her original owl mysteriously disappeared after I entered it in the fair. She was upset but informed me she would rather have a pink one anyways so I finished that one up last night, switching from crochet to seed catalog perusing while listening to Racheal Yamagata on Pandora. My kind of night.</div>

The finished product was apparently quite appealing because the kids could not stop asking about them!</div>

We have been taking lots of fun seasonal family field trips as well. We always make it to our local zoo for the lights. It was very magical with the snow and I sure hope we will have some again next year. It really made the lights sparkle! My little girl is wearing a hat I made her that is much like the one from my favorite version of The Secret Garden from the 90's. It has a little puff ball on top and she calls it her meatball hat. Hope you and your family are having lots of fun this season too!</div>
